Norwegian green hydrogen project moves forward

Green hydrogen producer Gen2 Energy has signed a deal with Vefsn municipality in Norway to buy land for the production and shipping of green hydrogen from 2024.

The deal also includes access to quay facilities at the Port of Helgeland. No details have been released on the proposed size of the facility.

“We are very pleased to have chosen Mosjoen as the location for large-scale production of green hydrogen. Mosjoen has a good mix of cheap renewable energy, relevant labour from the process industry and good shipping opportunities,” says Jonas Meyer, general manager of Gen2.

The Vefsn region has an aluminium manufacturing base with a large number of associated supplier companies. The parties agreed that efforts will be made to supply green hydrogen locally to that sector, and Gen2 expects to sign a deal soon with aluminium manufacturer Alcoa—which has a number of operations in the area.

Trading house Vitol has acquired a 10pc stake in Gen2 as it looks to decarbonise its trading portfolio.

Gen2 has also invested in a 3,500t/yr green hydrogen production project in Mid-Norway that will start production in 2024.

The Norwegian government’s hydrogen strategy is focused on blue hydrogen in the near-term rather than green, with the initial goal that five blue hydrogen hubs will be established in coastal regions to provide an alternative fuel for the shipping industry and for some parts of the road transport sector.

However the strategy also says it will look to pursue 5-10 green hydrogen pilot projects.
