EU issues hydrogen funding call

The EU’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership (CHP) has launched a call for proposals for projects to draw from its €300mn ($329mn) fund.

There are two deadlines to apply: the first in May and the second in September. Innovative projects in the areas of green hydrogen, storage, transport, heat and power, hydrogen valleys, and strategic research are invited to apply.

Partnership officials hope to see application from several flagship projects that will sit across a number of the different areas.

The strategic research area will employ a multidisciplinary approach to address the sustainability and criticality of electrolyser and fuel-cell materials.

“This momentous investment is essential to ensure the development of a dynamic hydrogen economy of diverse innovators, manufacturers, producers and end-users across the EU for a sustainable and prosperous hydrogen-based future,” says Bart Biebuyck, executive director of the CHP.

The European Commission launched the CHP—a joint initiative with knowledge-sharing forum the Clean Hydrogen Alliance that will expand the work of the EU’s Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU)—to accelerate the development and deployment of a European value chain for clean hydrogen technologies.

The FCH JU has funded 285 research and demonstration projects since being established in 2008, with an overall budget of more than €1bn.

The partnership will see a doubling of that budget to €2bn over the next decade, as well as a more targeted strategy designed to enable three specific goals: scaling up production, improving regulation and developing of hydrogen valleys.
