Invenergy to produce first green hydrogen by end of year

US energy developer Invenergy has announced plans to develop its first green hydrogen project, to be located in the state of Illinois.

Sauk Valley Hydrogen will use a proton-exchange-membrane electrolyser from manufacturer Ohmium International powered by a co-located Invenergy solar project to generate up to 52t/yr of hydrogen.

The project will also have 400kg of hydrogen storage capacity, as well as loading capacity for shipping hydrogen offsite.

Hydrogen produced at Sauk Valley could be used in Invenergy’s nearby 584MW Nelson Energy Center gas-fired power plant.

52t/yr – Estimated production capacity

Invenergy plans to begin construction in the coming months and to start up the facility by the end of this year.

“The Invenergy team is incredibly excited to launch our first green hydrogen venture as we continue to lead the transition to a clean energy future,” says Matt Nicholls, vice-president, origination new technologies, at Invenergy. “Green hydrogen is an innovative, zero-carbon solution that enables us to decarbonise sectors across the economy through clean power.”

Invenergy has developed more than 30GW of wind, solar, natural gas and storage capacity. And earlier this year, it secured $3bn from investment management firm Blackstone to accelerate its rollout of clean energy.
