Enagas to acquire 20pc of future UK–Netherlands hydrogen link

Spain’s Enagas has agreed to acquire a 20pc stake from Germany’s Uniper in the company that owns the 235km BBL natural gas interconnector between the UK and the Netherlands. The BBL has been included in European transmission system operator (TSO) initiative the European Hydrogen Backbone’s (EHB’s) maps of existing infrastructure that could be converted to supply hydrogen.

The EHB anticipates that the 53,000km EHB will be made up of 60pc repurposed natural gas infrastructure and 40pc new pipelines and will require €80–143bn ($86.6–154.8bn) of investment by 2040.

Enagas and fellow BBL owners Dutch TSO Gasunie (60pc) and Belgian peer Fluxys (20pc) are all members of the EHB.
