BP progresses Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub

BP Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy—a joint venture between BP and local government body Aberdeen City Council—has submitted a planning application for an integrated green hydrogen and vehicle refuelling hub.

The first phase of the project will use electricity from a planned solar farm to produce 800kg/d of hydrogen, enough to fuel 25 buses a day as well as a range of public and private vehicles. BP Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy aims to bring the first phase online by March next year, with future phases scaling up production to supply rail, trucks and marine transport, as well as hydrogen for heating and potentially export.

The facility will be sited on industrial land in Aberdeen, while the solar farm will be built on the former Ness landfill site. The outcome of the planning application is expected this summer.

BP Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy plans to award contracts for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of hydrogen equipment in the coming months. The company notes it is particularly interested in working with suppliers either based in Scotland or willing to establish operations in the country.
