Stantec partnering with Pacific Clean Fuels to develop H2 fueling solutions in California (U.S.)

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is partnering with The Papé Group through their subsidiary Pacific Clean Fuels to develop H2 fueling solutions at multiple locations throughout California. As a leading capital equipment provider, Pacific Clean Fuels is making significant strides in promoting H2 as a key solution across multiple industries in the U.S. West. H2 is a critical element of the energy transition and will be leveraged to power communities and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) in the U.S. and around the world.

Partnering with Stantec will advance Pacific Clean Fuels’ ambitious sustainability goals by delivering a comprehensive suite of services on their California Program, including early-stage planning, permitting, and detailed design and engineering. Leveraging Stantec’s proprietary ZEV Decide technology, the firm is strategically identifying optimal infrastructure deployment locations to maximize regional impact. The integrated approach includes evaluating diverse energy solutions such as microgrids, conducting in-depth power strategy analyses to enhance feasibility and economic performance, performing factory equipment inspections, and providing expert sales engineering support.

“Our multidisciplinary team understands the hurdles of navigating environmental regulations and permitting and brings a deep expertise in managing compliance requirements while keeping projects on track,” said Wicus Postma, principal at Stantec. “We utilize permit streamlining processes and proactively anticipate potential obstacles. This holistic approach allows us to deliver sustainable energy solutions that meet both environmental and project-specific needs.”

"I am thrilled to support the development of H2 infrastructure in California. This initiative not only represents a significant step towards a sustainable future but also allows Stantec to leverage our relationships with municipalities and regulatory agencies,” said Sarah Spann, principal environmental planner at Stantec. “By bridging the gap between technical engineering and the authorities having jurisdiction, we help deliver projects that are both innovative and compliant, ultimately benefiting the communities we serve."

Pacific Clean Fuels’ comprehensive, programmatic approach to decarbonization encompasses three main initiatives. In the near term, they are evaluating their current sites in California for temporary mobile fueling solutions, with a vision for permanent fueling infrastructure in the future. Additionally, they are exploring onsite H2 production, including the use of tank trailers to transport H2 to their various facilities.

“At Pacific Clean Fuels, we’re excited to partner with Stantec to accelerate the deployment of H2 infrastructure across California,” said Gabriel Olson, Director of Alternative Energy at Pacific Clean Fuels. “Their deep technical expertise and integrated approach are invaluable as we work to build a scalable H2 network that supports our customers’ clean energy goals and drives meaningful GHG reductions throughout the region.”

Stantec has extensive experience in delivering solutions to drive the energy transition forward in North America and around the world. The firm’s H2 solutions team—comprised of integrated experts in energy, infrastructure, buildings, water, and environmental services—is committed to helping clients reach their decarbonization goals.

Currently, Stantec is designing a H2 fueling station for the City of Pasadena’s fleet of H2 fuel cell vehicles, assisting them with their goals for cleaner air, efficient refueling, and sustainable transportation. In Moreno Valley, Chevron opened their first H2 fueling station in July. It’s one of several stations Stantec is supporting, highlighting Chevron’s investment in H2 infrastructure, contributing to California’s broader goal of deploying 200 H2 stations by 2035, and supporting the state’s transition to a zero-emission vehicle future.
