Australian oil and gas producer Woodside Energy has announced a strategic partnership with Japan Suiso Energy (JSE) and Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO) to establish a liquid H2 supply chain between Australia and Japan.
The three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to transport liquid H2 produced at Woodside’s planned H2Perth project in Western Australia. The H2 will be shipped via specialized liquid H2 carriers to dedicated receiving terminals in Japan, creating a vital clean energy link between the two nations.
Woodside originally committed more than $659.7 MM in 2021 to develop the H2Perth facility, a carbon-neutral, commercial-scale H2 hub. Once operational, the project is expected to initially produce up to 100 tpd of liquid H2, utilizing natural gas as a feedstock while pursuing decarbonization strategies.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward advancing H2 as a sustainable energy solution in the Asia-Pacific region, strengthening Australia–Japan energy ties and supporting both countries’ carbon neutrality goals.
