India’s plans to become a major exporter of green H2 are facing delays as global policy uncertainties, particularly in Europe, have affected demand outlooks. Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Sarangi announced that the country now expects to produce 3 MMtpy of green H2 by 2030, reaching the original 5 MMtpy goal by 2032 instead. The slowdown in global renewable energy decisions and delayed decarbonization milestones in maritime shipping have weakened near-term export prospects.

Despite this, India is shifting focus toward domestic demand, especially in shipping and methanol production. The Renewable Energy Ministry, in collaboration with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, plans to issue new tenders to supply green H2 to refineries. Additionally, the ministry is evaluating connectivity for clean energy projects and ensuring that projects without confirmed purchasers—totaling over 40 gigawatts—are addressed early to maintain viability.
